Violence continues in Sri Lanka despite emergency decree

Sri Lanka has imposed a nationwide state of emergency for the first time since the civil war era in response to days of violent unrest between Sinhalese and Muslim communities. The special measures permitting soldiers to be deployed in civilian areas will initially apply for 10 days at which point the deployment would need to be ratified by parliament said Mano Ganesan the Sri Lankan minister for co-existence. There were concerns that communal violence would spread Ganesan told the Guardian. We don t want to spread communal disharmony and hate speech. Arson attacks and riots have hit the central district of Kandy in recent days and there was similar violence in late February when mobs set fire to Muslim-owned businesses and a mosque in the east. Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar to undergo further treatment, leaves for US by special flight from Mumbai

Panaji: Ailing Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar left for the US on Tuesday night for further treatment from Mumbai where he was admitted at Lilavati Hospital. Parrikar left for the US for his further treatment by a special flight from Mumbai airport a senior official of the chief minister office told PTI. The chief minister left for the US in Air India flight at around 1.30 am. He is accompanied by a doctor and his elder son Utpal a senior official from CMO said. Parrikar was admitted at the Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai on 15 February and discharged on 22 February. On the same day he returned to Goa and presented the Budget in the Assembly but the session was truncated to only four days owing to his illness. He was later admitted to the Goa Medical College and Hospital after he suffered from dehydration.
